What is child massage?

A child massage appointment takes place with a parent or an older sibling present in the room. That is not optional, it is how we run every session.

Your child can remain fully clothed if they are more comfortable that way, or be draped with only the body part being treated exposed.

Before any hands-on work begins, the therapist discusses your concerns and the benefits of massage, and you agree together what type of treatment plan suits your child and which areas will be massaged during the session. Your child's comfort sets the pace throughout.

What does child massage help with?

  • Better sleep
  • Relief from growing pains
  • Easing muscle tension from sport and activity
  • Support during periods of stress or anxiety
  • Body awareness and comfort with healthy touch
  • Relief from constipation and digestive discomfort
  • Relief from chest or sinus congestion

We also offer therapeutic massage for children with specific needs, including pediatric massage for children with autism and Down syndrome. See Therapeutic Massage.

What to expect in your session

  1. You and the therapist talk through your concerns while your child settles in.
  2. The therapist explains what they plan to do, in language your child understands.
  3. You agree which areas will be worked and what your child is comfortable with.
  4. Your child stays clothed or is draped, whichever they prefer.
  5. You stay in the room for the whole appointment.

Children do not always want the full session, and that is fine. A shorter appointment your child enjoys is worth more than a full hour they endure.

Who should not book child massage

Do not book if your child has a fever, an acute infection, a contagious illness, or an undiagnosed injury. Speak to your child's physician first if they have a diagnosed medical condition, a recent fracture, a bleeding disorder, or are undergoing any medical treatment. If your child does not want the appointment, we will not proceed. Consent from the child matters as much as consent from the parent.
