What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a focused treatment for bodies under load. Whether you are training for an event, recovering from an injury, or working a physically demanding job, the goal is to keep the tissue functioning at its best.

The session blends deep tissue work with stretching and joint mobilization. Your therapist may add gua sha, IASTM, cupping, myofascial release or assisted stretching depending on what your body needs that day.

Please bring a pair of shorts and a sports bra to your appointment. Sports massage involves active movement and stretching that a draped table massage does not accommodate.

What does sports massage help with?

  • Reduced inflammation after training or competition
  • Improved range of motion
  • Faster healing of overworked muscles
  • Injury prevention through addressing imbalances early
  • Muscle tension from repetitive movement patterns
  • Recovery between training blocks

What to expect in your session

  1. You change into shorts and a sports bra.
  2. Intake covers your sport or activity, your training load, and any current niggles.
  3. Hands-on work through the loaded muscle groups, with stretching and mobilization built in.
  4. Your therapist may recommend timing for your next session around your training or event schedule.

Timing matters with sports massage. Deep work two days before a race is a different decision than deep work the week after one. Tell your therapist what is on your calendar.

Who should not book sports massage

Do not book sports massage over an acute injury in the first 48 to 72 hours, an undiagnosed injury, a suspected fracture or tear, or an area with active swelling, heat and redness. Get it assessed first. Tell your therapist if you are on blood thinners, have a clotting disorder, or have any condition affecting bone density.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book a sports massage relative to an event?

General guidance is lighter, flushing work in the 48 hours before an event and deeper work no closer than three to five days out. Recovery work can start once acute soreness settles. Your therapist will give you a plan based on your sport.

Do I need to be an athlete to book sports massage?

No. Sports massage suits anyone whose body is under physical load, including trades, shift work, heavy industry and anyone maintaining an active lifestyle.

What should I wear to a sports massage?

Shorts and a sports bra. The session involves stretching and joint mobilization that needs range of movement.

What is the difference between sports massage and deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue is sustained pressure into deeper tissue layers. Sports massage uses that pressure alongside stretching and mobilization, and targets the specific muscle groups your activity loads.

Can I add cupping or IASTM to a sports massage?

Yes. Gua sha, IASTM,cupping, myofascial release and assisted stretching can all be added. Mention it when you book.

Will sports massage help with shin splints or IT band pain?

It is commonly used for both, alongside addressing the loading pattern that caused them. Your therapist will work the tissue and flag what to change in your training.
