What is essential oil massage?

Essential oils promote healing and a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation.

In choosing oils for the treatment, your massage therapist generally creates a blend of three oils, which are then added to a carrier oil. A blend means that when a particular set of oils are combined they enhance each other's properties and make a pleasing scent.

The oil is applied in long sweeping strokes that warm the skin and muscle and prepare the body for deeper work. Once the muscles are warmed, your therapist continues with deeper massage, rolling and squeezing the skin and underlying muscle between the hands. This should not be painful. It should be deeply relaxing.

Who should not book essential oil massage

Tell your therapist before your session if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have epilepsy, asthma or a respiratory condition, have high blood pressure, have sensitive or broken skin, or have a known allergy to any plant or oil. Several essential oils are contraindicated in those situations, and some increase photosensitivity, meaning you should avoid sun exposure on the treated skin afterward. Essential oil massage is not recommended for young children without specific guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy at our clinic is the use of essential oils during your massage, free of charge. Essential oil massage is a treatment built around a custom three-oil therapeutic blend in a carrier oil, at $15 plus GST.

Can I pick my own oils?

Your therapist blends based on what you tell them you want from the session. They will work around any scent you dislike or react to.

Will the oils stain my clothes?

Carrier oil can mark fabric. Wear something you are not precious about, and consider booking at a time when you can shower afterward.

Can essential oil massage help with menstrual cramps?

Relief of menstrual cramps and support for hormone regulation are both among the listed effects. Mention where you are in your cycle so the blend is selected accordingly.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Several oils are avoided during pregnancy. Book Pregnancy Massage and tell your therapist you are pregnant, so any oils used are appropriate for your stage.

Should I avoid the sun afterward?

Some oils, particularly citrus-based ones, increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Your therapist will tell you if that applies to your blend.
