What is hot stone massage?

Smooth stones of varying weight and size are pre-warmed in water. Your therapist applies oil and performs Swedish massage technique while holding the warm stones in their hands.

At points during the session, warm stones may be placed on key points of the body including the back, palms and feet.

The heat penetrates into the tissue, which lets the therapist work into the muscle without relying on deep pressure, or reach an area that would otherwise be too tender to treat directly.

What does hot stone massage help with?

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Poor circulation and feeling cold
  • Muscle tension
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue

Hot stone is a good option in a Fort McMurray winter, when cold-related tension through the shoulders and neck is one of the more common things clients come in with.

What to expect in your session

  1. Your therapist heats the stones before you arrive.
  2. The session runs as a Swedish massage, with the stones held in the therapist's hands.
  3. Stones may be placed and left on the back, palms or feet while other areas are worked.
  4. Your therapist checks the temperature with you. Warm should never mean uncomfortable.

Say something immediately if a stone feels too hot. Heat tolerance varies a lot between people and across different parts of the body.

Who should not book aromatherapy

Hot stone is not appropriate if you have neuropathy or any loss of sensation, uncontrolled diabetes, a heart condition, uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, varicose veins, a blood clotting disorder or are on blood thinners, or if you have sunburn, open wounds or a skin condition in the treatment area. It is also generally avoided during pregnancy. Book Pregnancy Massage instead. If you cannot reliably feel heat in an area, the stones should not go there.

Frequently asked questions

How hot are the stones?

Warm, not hot enough to be uncomfortable. Your therapist checks the temperature and adjusts. Tell them immediately if a stone feels too warm on your skin.

How much does hot stone massage cost?

Hot stone is listed as a $25 add-on plus GST to a massage treatment.

Is hot stone massage good for deep muscle tension?

Yes, though it works differently to deep tissue massage. The heat softens the tissue so the therapist can reach depth with less pressure. It suits people who want the result of deep work without the intensity.

Can I get hot stone massage while pregnant?

Hot stone is generally avoided during pregnancy because of the heat. Book prenatal massage instead, which uses positioning and technique adapted to pregnancy.

Do the stones stay on me the whole time?

No. Some are held in the therapist's hands during the massage strokes and others are placed on key points for part of the session.

Will I need to shower afterward?

Oil is used throughout, so plan for that. Many clients book at the end of the day for that reason.
