What is cupping massage?

Cupping is a time-honoured therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cups create gentle suction on the skin, which lifts the tissue rather than compressing it. That decompression is what makes it feel different to every other treatment on our list.

Our therapists offer several cupping styles:

  • Fire cupping - the traditional moving technique, using heat to create the suction
  • Plastic pump cupping - suction created mechanically, easy to control precisely
  • Silicone cupping - soft cups that glide, the gentlest of the three

Each method has a distinct feel and intensity. Your therapist selects the approach that suits your body and your comfort level.

What does cupping massage help with?

  • Muscle tightness
  • Chronic pain
  • Respiratory concerns
  • General detoxification
  • Restricted fascia and adhesions
  • Circulation into congested areas

Cupping promotes the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, helping the body unwind, restore balance and recover naturally.

What to expect in your session

  1. Tell your therapist you want cupping added, either at booking or at the start of the session.
  2. Oil is applied so the cups can glide, for moving cupping styles.
  3. Cups are applied with suction and either held in place or moved across the tissue.
  4. You may feel a pulling or tight sensation. It should not be painful.
  5. Cups are removed and the area is worked by hand.

Circular marks are common afterward. They are not bruises in the usual sense and typically fade within three to seven days. If you have an event, a wedding or a beach holiday coming up, factor that in.

Who should not book aromatherapy

Cupping is not appropriate over open wounds, active skin infections, sunburn, eczema or psoriasis flares, varicose veins, or areas with a deep vein thrombosis. Avoid it if you are on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have severe anemia, or bruise very easily. Fire cupping specifically is avoided in pregnancy and over the abdomen and lower back during pregnancy. Tell your therapist if you have any cancer diagnosis or organ failure so they can adapt or recommend an alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Does cupping leave marks?

Circular discolouration where the cups sat is normal and usually fades within three to seven days. The colour reflects how congested the area was rather than how hard the treatment was.

Does cupping hurt?

It feels like a strong pulling or tightness rather than pressure. Most clients find it comfortable, and moving cupping with silicone cups is the gentlest option if you are unsure.

What is the difference between fire cupping and silicone cupping?

Fire cupping uses heat to create the suction and produces the strongest draw. Plastic pump cupping gives precise mechanical control. Silicone cups are soft, glide easily, and are the mildest of the three.

How much does cupping cost?

Cupping is listed as a $20 add-on plus GST to a massage treatment.

Can I shower after cupping?

Wait a few hours, and keep the water warm rather than hot. Your pores are open and the tissue has been drawn up, so cold or very hot water right after is not ideal.

Can cupping be added to a sports massage?

Yes. Cupping, gua sha, IASTM, myofascial release and assisted stretching are all commonly added to sports massage.
