What is IASTM?

IASTM uses smooth, specialized tools rather than hands to work through soft tissue. The instruments let your therapist detect and treat restriction with a precision that fingers alone cannot match, and apply consistent force without fatiguing.

The technique improves circulation, reduces inflammation and encourages your body's natural healing process.

You can add IASTM to your hour treatment, or book a 30 minute session targeted at a specific problem area. It pairs particularly well with sports massage.

What does IASTM help with?

  • Areas that feel stiff, achy or restricted from old injuries
  • Repetitive strain from work or training
  • Restriction from poor posture
  • Scar tissue and adhesions
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Slow recovery

By restoring healthy movement in the soft tissue, IASTM helps you move more freely, recover faster and feel better in your body. Many clients find it relaxing and notice improved flexibility, less pain and better overall mobility after just a few sessions.

What to expect in your session?

  1. Your therapist locates the restricted tissue, often by feel through the instrument.
  2. Lubricant is applied so the tool glides.
  3. The instrument is worked across the tissue in specific directions.
  4. Redness in the treated area is common and expected.
  5. Your therapist may finish with hand work or stretching.

The 30 minute option exists because IASTM is targeted. If your issue is one elbow or one shin, you do not need an hour.

Who should not book IASTM

Avoid IASTM over open wounds, active infection, unhealed fractures, acute inflammation, or areas with a known blood clot. Tell your therapist if you are on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have osteoporosis, are on long-term corticosteroids, or have thin or fragile skin. Recent scar tissue needs to be fully healed before instrument work begins.

Frequently asked questions

What does IASTM stand for?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Is IASTM the same as Graston Technique?

Graston is one branded system within the broader IASTM category. The principle and the effect are the same.

Does IASTM hurt?

There is usually a scraping or gritty sensation over restricted tissue that eases as the area releases. Many clients describe it as relaxing rather than painful.

Will IASTM leave marks?

Temporary redness in the treated area is normal. It typically settles within hours to a day or two.

Can I book IASTM on its own?

Yes. There is a 30 minute targeted option for a specific problem area, or you can add it to a 60 minute treatment.

How is IASTM different from cupping?

Cupping lifts tissue through suction. IASTM applies directed pressure across tissue with a tool. They address similar problems from opposite directions and are often used in the same session.
