Reflexology in Fort McMurray

Reflexology is a foot-based treatment in which every part of the foot corresponds to an area of the body. Massage of the feet stimulates the corresponding part, so a reflexology session is regarded as the equivalent of a full body massage. Higher Health Acupuncture & Massage Therapy Clinic offers reflexology in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Session length - 45 / 60 minutes

Pressure - Firm but gentle, never uncomfortable

Clothing - Fully clothed, shoes and socks off

Best for - Stress, circulation, relaxation, tired feet

Suitable for - Any age, from babies to seniors

Insurance - Not covered

What is reflexology?

Reflexology maps the surface of the foot to the rest of the body. Working a specific zone of the foot is understood to stimulate the corresponding area, which is why a foot-only session is treated as a whole-body treatment.

The techniques include finger or thumb walking, where the therapist walks the finger or thumb over different areas of the foot in a set sequence, and massage and kneading of the foot using the whole hand.

The experience is generally firm but gentle. It should never cause discomfort or pain.

The most obvious effect of reflexology is stress reduction. According to The Complete Illustrated Guide to Reflexology, people of any age can benefit from reflexology, including the elderly, women, men, teenagers, children and babies.

What does reflexology help with?

  • Improves blood circulation
  • Helps with low mood
  • Supports relaxation
  • Soothing after a tiring and stressful day
  • Relieves body aches and pains

What to expect in your session

  1. You stay fully clothed. Shoes and socks come off.
  2. You sit or lie back with your feet supported.
  3. Your therapist works through a set sequence over both feet.
  4. They may pause on areas that feel congested or tender.

Reflexology is a good option if you want treatment but do not want to undress, or if a general massage is not comfortable for you right now.

Who should not book reflexology

Avoid reflexology if you have an open wound, active infection, athlete's foot, gout flare, or a recent fracture or injury in the foot or ankle. Tell your therapist if you have a deep vein thrombosis or history of blood clots, diabetes with foot complications or neuropathy, or are pregnant, since some reflexology points are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

Is reflexology just a foot massage?

A foot massage works the foot for its own sake. Reflexology follows a specific map and sequence, with the intention of affecting the corresponding areas of the body.

Does reflexology hurt?

No. The pressure is firm but gentle. Some zones may feel tender, which typically eases as the therapist works them.

Do I need to undress for reflexology?

No. You stay fully clothed with only shoes and socks removed.

Is reflexology covered by insurance in Alberta?

As a stand alone treatment, no. If Reflexology is incorporated into your regular massage treatment, yes.

Can children get reflexology?

Yes. Reflexology is considered suitable for any age. See also Child Massage.

How long before I feel a difference?

Most clients notice relaxation during the session itself. For ongoing concerns, a short course of sessions gives a better read than a single appointment.
